Rudolf Hellmuth graduated in mechanical engineering from the University of São Paulo, and he obtained a PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Galway. Prior to joining the Magdi Yacoub Institute, Rudolf served as a design engineer developing mechanical ventilation systems for Dixtal Biomedica (now Philips Healthcare), as a software engineer for computer vision applications at the German Sport University, and as a consultant R&D engineer for pre-clinical development of cardiovascular devices at Vascular Flow Technologies. He was a visiting researcher at the Artificial Blood Laboratory, McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, and an honorary research fellow at the Institute for Medical Science and Technology, University of Dundee. Rudolf also participated as an experienced researcher in the EU Marie Curie projects ReDVA and Bioimplant, authoring articles and supervising students in computational fluid mechanics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), and processing of medical images. He is currently a research fellow at the Magdi Yacoub Institute and an honorary research fellow at Imperial College London. His main research area is tissue engineering of heart valves, especially in the relationship between material structure and valve dynamics.
