Professor Ashgar Khagani

Dr. Khaghani is recognised as a pioneer in the field of thoracic organ transplantation. In addition to his many innovative contributions to heart and lung transplantation, he holds the preeminent distinction of personally performing more than 1,000 transplants in adults and children around the world. This is believed to be the highest number of transplants performed by anyone. He was also the most experienced ventricular assist device (VAD) surgeon in the United Kingdom and contributed enormously to heart recovery concepts on assist devices. He also performed heart transplantation on the youngest baby ever to have received a piggyback heart transplant in the world.

Dr. Khaghani has been practicing cardiac surgery for more than 30 years and is a renowned international expert on heart and lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, as well as a leader in complex aortic surgeries. He has made more than 200 medical presentations and lectures all over the world and has published more than 120 papers in peer reviewed journals and chapters on cardiac surgery, transplantation and VADS. He is a professor of surgery at Michigan State College of Human Medicine. Dr. Khaghani’s association with the Spectrum Health Richard DeVos Heart & Lung Transplant Program is considered invaluable to all patients who will be referred to Spectrum Health for life-saving heart and lung transplantation. Dr. Khaghani notes, “My goal is to play a significant role in the formation and expansion of the program, to help the West Michigan community and offer them top quality service in the treatment of advanced heart failure and lung failure and to continue contributing to teaching and research in the fields."
