Professor Barbir is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He is also a Professor in vascular and metabolic medicine at the TransCampus Technische Universitat, Dresend and King’s College London. He graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1980 and did his initial training in general medicine and cardiology in Ireland and at Hammersmith Hospital, London. In 1988 he worked at Harefield Hospital in clinical research under Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub and had further training in the department of cardiology until 1993 when he undertook his current consultant post. In 2000 he established and directed the largest lipoprotein apheresis centre in the UK based at Harefield Hospital. He is the lead consultant in genetic screening for familial hypercholesterolaemia in adults and children and has wide expertise in the management of lipid disorders. His main interest and contribution is in the field of cardiovascular risk detection and management. Professor Barbir is also a member and contributed to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellent Development Group on clinical guidelines for the management of familial hypercholesterolaemia and lipoprotein apheresis. He is also a member of the Working Group HEART UK on lipoprotein apheresis and a member of the medical board of the Chain of Hope.
Professor Barbir is one of the directors and lecturers for the Postgraduate Course in Cardiometabolic Medicine for the Royal Society of Medicine. He is also involved in teaching medical students and lead supervisor for PhD students at Imperial College.
Professor Barbir has published more than 120 original manuscripts in medical journals, which include The Lancet, Circulation etc and has contributed to many reviews and text book chapters.
